Margaree Firemen’s Club & Chase the Ace

The Margaree Fire Hall in Margaree Forks is open all-year round and boasts a bar, billiards, and dart boards. Its first and second floors are excellent spaces for community events; from birthday parties to yoga classes and adult learning courses to Chase the Ace, the Fire Hall has been home to it all as a lively community hub. Speaking of Chase the Ace, this popular weekly fundraiser takes place on Wednesday evenings and tickets can be purchased ahead of time at local retailers like the Margaree Co-op. Proceeds go towards the Margaree Volunteer Fire Department and North East Margaree Volunteer Fire Department. If you’re feeling lucky, you could also support Chase the Ace games in the neighbouring communities of Baddeck, Inverness, and Cheticamp (and beyond). And if you’ve never heard of Chase the Ace, well, b’y, it’s about time you learned!

Trivia and Literary Events

During the fall and winter months (November-March), the Cabot Public House hosts a weekly trivia night on Wednesday evenings. Come for the trivia and stay for the food and friendly rivalries. The Cabot Public House isn’t the only place to quench your thirst for questions – the Cabot Trail Writers Festival hosts an trivia night fundraiser for its “annual celebration of reading and writing in the heart of Cape Breton Island.” Margaree is proudly home to a number of writers and creatives and this is one must-attend event that celebrates and learns from them. Outside of the Cabot Trail Writers Festival, there are local readings and book launches in support of local writers’ work. A cornerstone of the literary scene in Margaree is the Canada Day Literary Festival, which takes place at the Coady Tompkins Memorial Library in Margaree Forks annually on July 1st. The 2017 festival was its sixth year and features renowned authors with Cape Breton connections such as Alistair MacLeod.

Music and Creative Arts

The Normaway Inn is an iconic place to enjoy a ceilidh and square dance, both at The Inn and The Barn from July to October. Celtic Colours is an Island-wide festival that takes place every October. Breathtaking views and music can be enjoyed alongside community meals and cultural events and the Margaree Area has increasingly hosted successful events from year to year. St. Joseph’s Parish Hall in South West Margaree has adult square dances throughout the summer and fall on Friday nights – live music and dancing partners are never in short supply. The Inverness County Centre for the Arts (ICCA) features an art gallery with exciting exhibits throughout the year that showcase innovative art from near and far. From Spring to Fall, the ICCA also offers workshops and learning opportunities related to a range of artistic, craftsmanship, and creative skills. It is also often the site of many musical performances throughout the year. The Strathspey Performing Arts Centre is another stunning location to attend musical performances, including musical theatre and other live theatre and film. In addition to showcasing the work of musicians and artists across the above-mentioned venues, Paint Nights are becoming increasingly common throughout the winter months as fundraisers for various community groups in Margaree, where all levels of talent and experience flourish.

Music and Creative Arts

The Lakes Café is not only a restaurant and campground, but a fun spot for the family to take on go-karting around a paved 850ft track, practice their putt during a round of 18-hole mini-golf, make use of the canoes, kayaks and paddleboats, and swim and fish in Lake O’Law. During the year, but especially during the quieter winter months, Radio-Bingo is a joy that you can play while staying cozy indoors. Radio-Bingo takes place Friday nights via 106.1 CKJM and cards are sold across the region.
